Bully prevention: ‘The Power of One’

Bully Prevention Week at Alden Terrace School kicked off on March 16 with the anti-bullying assembly “The Power of One.”

The assembly, sponsored by the school’s PTA, featured professional actors in skits demonstrating what bullying is and how it hurts others. It also provided students with the tools needed to combat bullying and encouraged them to be ‘upstanders’ not bystanders.

In addition to the assembly, the school’s weeklong activities, which tied into the theme “I Will Lend a Hand,” comprised of students dressing in green for “We are Lucky to Be Part of the Alden Terrace Family” day and reading stories and watching videos on bully prevention.

It also included students tracing their hands and writing down something they had learned, as a way to reflect on the week’s activities. The traced hands will be posted around the school to remind students what they learned.

According to Alden Terrace Social Worker Amy Gamrat, the bully prevention activities were focused on giving students the tools needed to handle negative peer interactions and bullying situations.

“It’s important to give them the power to say something,” Gamrat said.
