• Smoke detectors should not be installed near a window because drafts could interfere with their operation.

• Families should also develop and practice a home fire escape plan.

• Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for testing smoke alarms and replacing the batteries.

The Elmont Volunteer Fire Department has 220 volunteer members serving the community as firefighters and emergency response personnel. In 2013, the Department responded to 1,561 calls for assistance, of which 400 were ambulance calls. In 2013, Elmont Fire Department fought 22 working fires, with no fatalities.
