Elmont H.S. students aid fire victims

Students in Elmont Memorial High School’s Key Club and Key Builders responded to the request of Hempstead’s Chamber of Commerce and Civic Association for assistance in aiding the 300 Terrace Avenue residents who were displaced by a fire on Feb. 19.

The groups requested donations from staff and students and received an overwhelming response. In just two weeks, they were able to amass more than 18 cases of new school supplies, which included backpacks, calculators, binders and art supplies. They also collected personal hygiene items, food and 15 bags of new and gently used clothing.

The tragedy allowed Key Club and Key Builders members to realize the impact true community spirit can have. They were genuinely surprised and proud of the outpouring of support from the Elmont community and the difference that one community can make for others.
