Harlem Wizards hoop it up at Dutch Broadway

Students from Dutch Broadway School in Elmont kicked off their school’s Parents as Reading Partners program with a high-energy assembly featuring the Harlem Wizards.

Members of the world-renowned basketball team had students dancing in their seats, prior to the start of the event, which included comedy, interactive games and basketball tricks, as well as student and teacher participation. The assembly was sponsored by the school’s PTA as a way to encourage students to shoot for success during the school’s month-long PARP celebration. According to Assistant Principal Shawnee Warfield, the Shoot for Success-May Madness theme mirrored the NBA’s March Madness, but for students success will be achieved by reading each night for at least 20 minutes and through completion of a weekly reading log.

“What better way to top off our PARP celebration than with the Harlem Wizards,” Warfield said. “The players, who are both college graduates, shared their stories and their love of reading with our students.”
