LIPA weathers the storm

Due to the preparations it took in advance of Nemo, LIPA said that it was able to respond to outages quickly and get things up and running again much faster than after Hurricane Sandy.

Approximately 40,000 homes across Long Island lost power, LIPA said, but as of 1 p.m. power was restored to approximately 29,000 of them. Most of those restorations were made within four hours of power going out.

Though the storm is over, outages may still occur. Snow on tree limbs, coupled with winds, could still knock down wires. Power outages can be reported to National Grid through the LIPA hotline at 1-800-490-0075 or by visiting www.lipower.org from a computer or mobile device. To report via text messaging, text OUT to myLIPA (695472) -- pre-registration is required.

If you see a downed wire, assume it is live and do not go near it. Report any downed wires by calling the LIPA hotline.
