Pedestrian injured in early-morning accident

The police are investigating a vehicular accident involving a pedestrian that occurred on Wednesday, May 20, at 5:04 a.m. in Elmont.

According to detectives, a 71-year-old woman was crossing northbound to southbound on Hempstead Turnpike, east of Meacham Avenue, when she was struck by a 2003 Harley Davidson operated by a 57-year-old man travelling west on Hempstead Turnpike.

Both the operator and the pedestrian were transported by police ambulances to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The pedestrian suffered a serious leg injury and the operator suffered non-life threatening internal injuries.

Hempstead Turnpike was closed westbound for several hours during the police investigation at the scene.

The motorcycle was impounded for a safety test. There is no apparent criminality at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
