The annual Jack Martins Sports Classic was held on Saturday at Dutch Broadway School, and featured the largest non-Belmont Stakes crowd ever at an Elmont function. The event, now in its 10th year and the fourth since Martins, the Republican state senator for the 7th District, began sponsoring it, attracted more than 10,000 participants and 450 volunteers, according to its chairman and founder, Scott Cushing.

The event featured 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, soccer games, rock-climbing and a variety of other sports, games and activities, as well as booths manned by a number of organizations.

Cushing told the Herald that the turnout was impressive, and the event was a great way to bring residents of Elmont and neighboring communities, together. “The tournament showed yet again that … it is indeed Elmont’s family reunion,” he said.
