State education commissioner visits Alden Terrace

Students and faculty of Alden Terrace School, in Elmont, were paid a visit from New York State Commissioner of Education Dr. John B. King Jr. on Sept. 9. The purpose of the visit was for Dr. King Jr. to have the opportunity to observe students and faculty engaging in a typical day of teaching and learning.

Dr. King Jr. toured the building and several classrooms alongside members of the Elmont School District Board of Education, Superintendent of School Al Harper and Alden Terrace Principal Amy Buchanan. State Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch, State Regent Roger Tilles and State Sens. Dean Skelos and Jack Martins, both of whom facilitated Dr. King Jr.’s visit, were also at the school.

Dr. King Jr. thanked district officials, faculty and staff for their dedication to teaching and wished them luck in the new school year.

“It’s always great to visit a school that has an energetic principal who is focused on instruction for the students,” Dr. King Jr. said. “It’s an impressively diverse student body where teachers are focused on making sure every students is prepared for college and career successes.”

Harper, likewise, appreciated the visit.

“We are very proud of the fact that the commissioner and the regent were able to come and visit us today to see some of the wonderful things happening in Elmont,” Harper said.
