Students pay tribute to historic women

Students in Jodi Goff’s and Antonette Hlinka’s classes at Elmont’s Covert Avenue School honored women of the 18th through 21st centuries in a play that featured original music and skits written by the teachers and students.

Prior to the show, students lined the hallways dressed in costume for a “wax museum,” representing men and women of historical significance such as Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and Oprah Winfrey. For the performance, students delivered biographies of Sacagawea, Ruby Bridges and Ella Fitzgerald, to name a few. They also performed skits and sang songs centered on women of the last four centuries. Those in attendance also viewed the video clip “Ain’t I a Woman?” featuring actress Kerry Washington.

In addition to helping write the play, the student-performers made props for the show. Members of the Art Club created the scenery for the performance.
