The Hewlett-Woodmere Giants win the pennant!

With a 14-hit barrage led by Mitch Shemtov, 3-for-3 4 RBI, and Nick Tumminello who went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, the Giants of the Hewlett-Woodmere Little League won the Intermediate Division championship 12-7 over the Diamondbacks at Grant Park in Hewlett on Father’s Day.

For two hours Grant Park’s outdoor ice rink was home to a full-fledged New York Islander practice, where the team went through its typical warm-ups and drills in Hewlett on Monday.

The crescendo of Spirit Week at Hewlett High School hit its high note as freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors took part in the annual Sports Night competition on March 3, which is coordinated by the Student Council.

Roughly 40 Lawrence High School students gathered by the pavilion in Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park on Dec. 11 to protest the school district’s cancelation of fall sports and the running of winter track, along with not having virtual clubs.

Maccabi karate team visits Woodsburgh

Dr. Alex Sternberg and his wife, Ilyse, opened their Woodsburgh home to the U.S. Karate team on May 28 that will be competing in the world Maccabiah Games in July. Sternberg was behind making karate a part of the games in 1977. In contrast, karate will make its Olympic debut in three years.
