Long Beach's Kennedy Plaza hosts a jazz night on Friday

Sounds of Summer

Steve Adelson and Friends

Long Beach’s renowned Chapman Stick player Steve Adelson is jazzin’ up his hometown when he takes to the stage with his Stick-Tet Power Trio for a night of creative tunes. Adelson and his Stick-Tet, featuring the Ucci Brothers — Chieli Minucci and Frank Bellucci — are joined by Uppercut, the 10-piece Big Band, and the Paula Atherton Group in what is sure to be an inspired evening of music-making. The Paula Atherton Group starts things off with some cool interpretations of original music, at 5:30 p.m., followed by the “master of the stick,” playing tunes from his new CD, “Sonic Imagination,” at 7 p.m., and ending with those funky R&B sounds of Uppercut.

Friday, Aug. 1. Free admission. City Hall’s Kennedy Plaza, Long Beach.

Shorts on the Beach

Another film festival is upon us, this time in the City by Sea. The Long Beach International Film Festival is under way, at locations around Long Beach and in Rockville Centre. Among the scheduled events for the three-year-old festival, is a beachside event, Friday’s “Shorts On the Beach.” It includes a concert with American Idol contestant Siobhan Magnus and other musical acts, along with a block of short films at the Allegria Hotel’s beachfront. “The Delivery Boy,” a 2003 short from Long Beach filmmaker Stephen Marro, opens the screening in its Long Island premiere. The charming story of a 10-year-old boy who has a crush on a girl in a bakery, the film was shot in Long Beach and Rockville Centre. Another Marro short, “The Quality of Mercy,” with Mary Louise Parker, also has its Long Island premiere, at a second screening of shorts at Molloy College’s Madison Theatre on Aug. 2.

Friday, Aug. 1, 8-10 p.m. Allegria Hotel, 80 West Broadway, Long Beach. Visit for schedule and ticket information.
