Attempted robbery and assault in Inwood

One convenience store employee was injured and another was not during what police said was an attempted robbery by a man with a gun at the Convenience Grocery at 15 Bayview Ave. in Inwood at 10:20 a.m. on Jan. 26.

An unshaven black man in his mid-30s, 6-2 with a slim build, wearing a black skullcap, blue sweater and black jacket entered the store armed with a handgun, police said. During the ensuing struggle between one store clerk, a man, 54, one gunshot was fired. The employee fell to the floor and was then pistol-whipped by the man, who left the scene on foot and headed west on Bayview Avenue.

The store clerk suffered a fractured skull and several cuts, according to police. No money or merchandise was taken.
