Breaking off for relaxation

Posted

Just as the second semester at Hewlett High School began, students became preoccupied planning their vacation schedule. It’s winter recess now, and many students are choosing to spend their time wisely by relaxing and recuperating, visiting colleges or catching up on sleep.

Two years have past since the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy led to the disruption of the annual weeklong February break. As a result, instead of the usual full week off, students and staff were left with a short three-day weekend. Now, students are sure to take advantage of the break and put aside their schoolwork in exchange for a plane ticket, a few extra hours of sleep and more fun activities.

Senior Jillian Feuerstein is using the time off to her advantage.  “I will be visiting some colleges and auditioning for theater programs this vacation,” she said.

Allison Rebenstock, also a senior, says she will also be spending time going on some campus tours. “I am visiting different colleges, including visiting my sister who is studying at Ohio State. I also plan on visiting some of my friends from sleep away camp,” she said.

Others, myself included, will be escaping the cold weather for a few days and will be soaking up the sun in popular locales such as Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean. My family and I are flying down to the Sunshine State to visit my grandparents and extended family members. Even if just for a few days, it is certainly nice to not have to bundle up and throw on a heavy down jacket every time I leave the house!

Whatever any students’ plans are, they will certainly tell you that it is surely refreshing to put school stresses and studying aside to spend time with family and catch up with old friends. However you choose to spend your break (if you’re fortunate enough to have off this week!) I hope you use your free time wisely and have a relaxing break!
