Checking out the summer programs

Posted

After a pleasant break Hewlett High School students have returned to their daily routine of waking up early, attending classes, taking part in extra-curricular activities and doing homework. With March beginning, the month of spring, students cannot help but have summer on their mind. The possibilities are endless, and decisions need to be made.
High school students often spend their summers working, attending academic programs, playing sports, fulfilling community service, travelling, or a mixture of activities. The summer is a great time for relaxation, but also provides ample time for academic pursuits. The way students spend their summers could boost their resumes for college. Pursuing a passion in any way is very respectable, whether it’s taking classes at a local college or building homes for families in poverty.
To help toward this goal, a Summer Opportunity fair was held on Feb. 26, in the high school gym. Mary Harrison, the chairperson of Pupil Personal Services and Raffaella Pugliese, a club advisor and social worker, organized the event. The Straight to Equality Club sponsored the event. A great variety of organizations, some from different countries, attended the fair to promote their programs. The hope was that students will be better informed about potential summer activities, and the scholarships provided.
Abbey Road Programs, Global Leadership Adventures, and Putney Student Travel offer global learning or service based trips while Summerfuel and goCAMPUSing Inc. visit universities in the United States. Attending one of these programs can be very beneficial for students heading toward college. Also at the fair were officials touting the l academic programs from LIU Post, Adelphi University Pre-College, and Baruch Leadership Academy.
Community service trips are very popular and intriguing. Whether the jobs are local or in a different country, they are definitely incredible experiences. “I loved going on my community service trip last summer,” said junior Jennifer Kirshner. “It was extremely eye-opening, and it taught me to have a different outlook on life. As a student of Hewlett High School, we are very lucky to have these amazing opportunities. I can’t wait for more summer adventures!”
Overall, the event was a great introduction to a variety of organizations that provide special summer services for students. “I think the Summer Opportunity Fair is a great way to learn about all the different programs I could attend,” said another junior Casey Levy. “As a junior, it is really important to spend the summer doing something fun, but also helpful for my future. I can’t wait for this summer, even if it means the start of writing college applications.”
