Approximately 40 people, including 25 high school students earning community service credits, collected about 2,000 pounds of debris; literally a ton of trash on April 22, according to Hempstead Lake State Park manager Bill Brown.

The cleanup, sponsored by the Town of Hempstead Democratic Committee Environmental Caucus, led by Woodmere resident Michael Turi, included students from Hewlett and Lawrence high schools, led by teacher Melissa Pantellis, head of Hewlett’s environmental club and Lawrence earth science teacher Adam Forman.
