Hewlett Happenings

Despite the snow, students are busy

Posted

On Saturday mornings, the view from Hewlett High School’s back parking lot is calm and beautiful. Although serene on the outside, inside the students are busy. The boys’ varsity basketball team is practicing, the girls’ varsity lacrosse team is working out in the weight room, and the robotics clubs is working directly above them in a physics classroom.
Hewlett High students are constantly learning. Behind the scenes, they can be found at school during weekends or attending events. The intensity of winter is definitely not hindering the determination of students who want to be active.
Snow may be on the ground, but spring sports’ teams are gearing up for their seasons. The Winter II season is still underway, with hopes for ending seasons successfully. The varsity wrestling team won its conference for the first time.
The robotics club is still busy after hosting their qualifier in preparation for the NYC/LI regionals on March 1. Bionica, the all-girls team, is competing this weekend at a qualifier in Syosset. The club will also be presenting their robots on Feb. 10 at Ogden Elementary School’s Family STEAM Night. This event has traveled to each school in the district and serves as an event where younger students and parents learn science through fun activities.
Community teenagers are also extremely excited for the opening of the designated area for teens in the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library. The official opening of Teen Spaces on Jan. 29 was long awaited by students and active community members at the library.

The new library space will provide computers and desks for students to study. Hewlett High School students appreciate their public library and use it often as a place to study and conduct research. Previously, quiet rooms fir study were limited but the new area could provide work areas to more students.
After this long week of midterms, many students might need a quick refresher before the activities of the weekend once again. The passion of students is inspiring to others as they see peers succeed. Balancing different activities with academics can often be challenging, but most students at Hewlett are willing and capable of working hard. Seniors take their last midterms as high school students and anxiously await to hear from the colleges of their choice, while juniors are in the midst of SAT/ACT preparation.
The snow may cover the ground, but students aren’t afraid to venture out and accomplish what they desire. At this half point of the school year, students are beginning to plan their summers, and there are still plenty of things to look forward to in the upcoming semester.
