Her smile lit up the room

She possessed the panache and sparkle of a movie star and loved to sing and enthrall her audience.
Bronx-born Dorothy Kasloff Zuckerman also devoted time to charitable causes and held her family in her heart.
Zuckerman died on Feb. 18, after what her family termed a “long battle with Alzheimer’s.” She was 89.
Born on July 19, 1925, she was the only child of Seymour and Bella Kasloff. A graduate of the High School of Music and Arts, Dorothy Kasloff met Marvin Zuckerman at their high school reunion. They divorced after 28 years of marriage. Marvin founded the Cedarhurst-based business Marvin & Sons. During the marriage the couple lived in Cedarhurst. She ran the store’s gift department for several years. Marvin died in 2014.
Her entertainment lineage included being a film extra, part of the Screen Actors Guild and former member of the Friars Club, the famous organization founded by press agents that extended membership to many entertainers.

A past president of the Woodmere chapter of Hadassah, the women’s Zionist organization, Zuckerman was also a longtime supporter of the Stecher and Horowitz Foundation that was formerly in Cedarhurst and continues to support musicians from its base in Manhattan.
According to her daughter, Jamie Young, she had a “warm heart, effervescent personality and beautiful smile that lit up the room.” An eccentric style and flair for fashion made her one of a kind, she said. “She had the ability to care for others unconditionally and entertain so many with her extravagant life stories,” Young said. “Her glamour and class above all else was undeniable, and she will forever be our Hollywood star.”
In addition to her daughter, Zuckerman is survived by stepsons Bob Zuckerman (Lois) and Michael Zuckerman (Nancy). She was a devoted grandmother to Hanna and Ryan Young, and a loving step-grandmother to Scott Zuckerman (Natalie), Michele Matalon (Scott), Brett Zuckerman (Jill), Ross Zuckerman and Sloane Zuckerman. Step-great grandmother to Landon, Shane, Dylan and Carly. Stepson Nat Zuckerman predeceased Zuckerman.
A funeral service was held at Gutterman’s in Rockville Centre on Feb. 22.
Donations can be made in Zuckerman’s memory to the Stecher and Horowitz Foundation at 119 West 57th St., New York, NY 10019 and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, www.alzfdn.org.
