Driving toward an expensive decision

Posted

With the college application process currently looming over my head, I have to ask myself, why? Why do we all choose to go through it, to spend the money?
Just applying to colleges can put a huge dent in our wallets; not to mention, college has become becoming increasingly expensive, so much so that I decided to go and check out what my investment could potentially buy.
I walked into the dealer, which sold Alfa Romeos, and instantly saw the beauty of one fourth of my total college tuition. It was stunning, the beautiful curves, the leather steering wheel and seats, and not to mention the 250 horsepower turbocharged engine that lay behind the glass screen that sat in the back of the car. The car was rear-engine mounted, like a proper European sports car, and sat low to the ground.
It was tempting, I really thought about a car vs. college education. I mean, both have a large initial down payment, they depreciate then appreciate, and both are extremely hard to get into. Also, both have their own boons and banes with extremely high initial costs. College could teach me skills and prepare me for the future. I could find my sense of direction, and what I would like to do with the rest of my life. In comparison, the car would be amazing to drive and I would have a great time inside of it.
The colleges that I am considering have low acceptance rates. While the Alfa has a really low, narrow, and oddly placed door. Once you are in the car, there is no power steering, but the car is extremely light. Making steering somewhat difficult but, not impossible. In college, you are supposed to steer towards your future with possibly some assistance. However, it is completely irresponsible to buy a $60,000-plus car, instead of college — even though it is a little tempting. College is an irreplaceable investment that is why it is so expensive and people are willing to pay for it. In fact, it is probably the most appreciating investment.
Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA) is also an appreciating investment that helps students to prepare for the future. It allows us to explore different areas of interest that would otherwise be useless or way too expensive in college.
Last year, I decided to take French for the sake of learning French and expanding my horizons. LWA, and other high schools, allow students to explore and grow without the fear of wasting thousands of dollars on credits. As a result, high school becomes a high mileage used car that allows one to make mistakes before they participate in the real ordeal — college, the expensive Italian sports car.
