Considered a woman ahead of her time, Eleanor G. Finkle, a former Hewlett Harbor and Woodmere resident who was a native of Far Rockaway died in her upstate Stone Ridge home surrounded by family on Feb. 17. She was 86.

The daughter of Solomon and Bessie Hofkin Fine, Finkle graduated from Hofstra University with a master’s degree in social work in an era when it was more uncommon for women to attend college.

She was a woman of powerful intellect who used her education to touch many lives, while also being a superb homemaker, according to family members. Finkle cherished her time with family and friends, and enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking, entertaining, knitting and her pets.

Finkle is survived by her sons, Steven Finkle of Troy, Robert Finkle of New York City and daughter Amy Finkle of Stone Ridge.

A private graveside service was held at Montefiore Cemetery in Springfield Gardens, Queens that was conducted by Cantor Bob Cohen of Temple Emanuel in Kingston.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Hudson Valley Hospice Foundation, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
