Enjoy the time during holiday break

Posted

Hewlett-Woodmere School District’s winter break is here, and so is the holiday cheer! Whether students are planning on traveling; celebrating with family; or enjoying the company of friends, students are excited especially for this time of relaxation, and an escape from vigorous schoolwork.
Hewlett High School’s Women’s Choir continued the annual caroling tradition and performed on Dec. 19 at all of the district’s schools. To spread their spirit before the holidays, the music group travels to the other schools and sings holiday related songs. Younger students love hearing the talented performers, as well as raising their excitement for the holidays. In addition, the high school students enjoy the opportunity to perform and look forward to it each year.
“Music has always been a huge part of my life; being able to spread holiday cheer to community members of all ages and being able to watch their faces light up from our music is something truly special,” senior Kelly Cheng said.
Within the spirit of giving, many students spend time during their winter vacation doing community service. Local charities offer opportunities to work in soup kitchens, food pantries, and churches to help others. Cedarhurst-based Rock n’ Wrap it Up annually delivers wrapped presents and clothes to the less fortunate.
Although many students escape to tropical locations, some prefer to take advantage of staying home. “The vacation is a helpful time for catching up on sleep and schoolwork, while being able to celebrate the holidays with friends,” Casey Levy said. “As a junior, this extra time is also resourceful for preparing for the upcoming ACT and SATs.”

Second quarter progress reports were sent out on Dec. 19, providing students with their educational progress. The vacation also gives students a chance to refresh their energy and determination to do well. Colleges have begun releasing results of early decision applicants, putting seniors on the edge as they learn of their futures. Winter break is convenient for seniors to de-stress, finalize decisions and applications, and learn more about possible college choices.
Extra-curricular clubs can also use this time to be productive in planning future activities and events. The Hewlett Robotics Club is preparing for their upcoming qualifier event on Jan. 18 at Hewlett High. The robots have to be completed to have time for practice before the competition.
The Environmental and Youth Leadership clubs are working on plans for a tree planting in the spring from the tree-grow-out section of the Community Garden Learning Center.
The winter break is a useful time for all students to pursue their current endeavors, create new holiday memories and then look forward to the future.
