The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will open for homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Specialists from the State of New York, FEMA, and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on the types of assistance available to survivors.

“The recovery center is a one-stop-shop for eligible survivors where they can meet with both state and federal representatives in order to get help as quickly as possible,” said County Executive Ed Mangano. “I encourage residents who think they may qualify for federal aid or would like additional information on what disaster assistance programs are available to stop by the mobile Disaster Recovery Center, call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 or visit www.DisasterAssistance.gov to register.”

FEMA’s Disaster Recovery Center is a readily accessible mobile office where applicants may go to receive guidance regarding disaster recovery, clarification of any written correspondence received, Housing Assistance and Rental Resource information, resolutions to problems and referrals to agencies that may provide further assistance, status of applications being processed by FEMA, as well as U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) program information.

The Nassau County location of FEMA’s Disaster Recovery Center will be located at Nassau Community College, 1 Education Drive in Garden City.

It will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.

Visiting with a recovery specialist is not a requirement for survivors who want disaster assistance, but the centers are a convenient way for people to get answers to their questions about disaster aid and how to apply for it.

Individuals can register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via web-enabled phone at m.fema.gov. Applicants may also call 1-800-621-332 or (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. If you use 711-Relay or Video Relay Service (VRS), call 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. EDT, seven days a week until further notice.
