Facing the challenges of junior year

Posted

The new school year at Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA) brought on many different people, classes and clubs. This was particularly scary for me since I am a creature of habit. I’ve always liked things to remain the same even if the change was for the better.
LWA new faculty, enrolled new students and added new classes. This new adjustment can be hard at first; missing people who left and meeting people who are new bring up odd feelings of nostalgia and excitement for what’s ahead. It is often less difficult for the person who leaves than it is for those who are left behind, especially when they grew strong bonds over the course of high school. It is so odd to think how some of these people can be thousands of miles away. Then there are the new faces. It takes time to get accustomed to new names, back stories, and personalities. This can be the same with new teachers; each one will have a different method of teaching, toughness and personality, and every new class will be a unique challenge.
New classes are always challenging, but with new subject matter and a new teacher, a student can feel off-balance. This is the common plight of going from biology to chemistry or chemistry to physics. All of these sciences have nothing to do with one another, for example there are no vectors in biology or chemistry, and there is no chemical bonding in physics. At LWA, they are all taught by different teachers.
This year, I will be taking physics honors, and it has been a relatively smooth transition, for me at least. I enjoy math and the teacher seems pleasant, so I am enjoying the class thus far. Students can help make a smooth transition by following a basic set of rules with a new teacher: respect, attentiveness and motivation. That is the code I live by when dealing with new teachers.
New clubs have been added this year; one of them, which I started, was the Congressional Debate team. I got the inspiration from when I went away to a congressional debate camp at Harvard. It was a great experience and made me want to bring the same experience to the school. The change has been a challenge, as it has been difficult to join the leagues and rally students to join. Hopefully, it will take off.
Despite all of these challenges, I hope for an amazing year as I take this journey through my junior year at LWA.
