Fall stirs a recipe of fun for LWA teens

Posted

The irritating sound of my alarm clock rang, and I sprang out of bed. The bright sun that usually greeted me when I woke up for school was supplanted by a darker sky. With each step I took to the end of my block, I heard the crunching of fallen leaves.
As I waited for the bus, a sudden chill brushed across my face. A feeling I hadn’t felt since last October. This could only mean one thing: summer was officially over and fall had begun. For some, fall may be a dreaded season. But for students at Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA), it brings about a lively and cheerful time.
Last week, Upper School students flocked to the library’s mezzanine for the annual Club Fair. Club presidents and advisors set up their clubs’ tables for students to browse and ask questions about each club. Clubs range from Multicultural, Peer Leadership, and French Club, to Mock Trial, Italian Club, and Dance Club. Each club actively contributes to the school community during the year through assemblies, fundraisers or after school activities.
Throughout the week leading up to the big fall event of Homecoming, students participated in Spirit Week. Each day was a different theme for which students from all three divisions would dress up. It was exciting for everyone to wear something other than the dress code to school.
Then, on Friday at 2:30 p.m., the entire school assembled in the gym for the Pep Rally. Student athletes ran through the gym and were cheered. The Dance Club even prepared a routine to pump up the crowd. As homecoming approached, LWA’s Student Senate rapidly made plans. Every year, each grade receives a few booths to run for the day, and every student takes a shift. For this Homecoming, the freshmen supplied carnival games, gave away prizes, and experienced this celebration as high schoolers for the first time. Meanwhile, the seniors held a raffle, served cotton candy, and cherished their last Homecoming as LWA students.
If all of this isn’t exciting enough, two soccer games were held throughout the day. Both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams battled against Portledge. The boys won, while the girls put up a long, hard fight but eventually lost. Homecoming is an amazing time for LWA alumni and families as well as members of the local community to rejoice and celebrate our school.
While fall rolls by, unique events are occurring each day at LWA. Whether it be the start of club meetings or the events during Homecoming week, the building is filled with positive, upbeat vibes. Crowds gather to observe the Lady Tigers as they spike the ball in volleyball, and the soccer teams try to put one in the back of the net. The Harvest Festival to celebrate Thanksgiving will soon be approaching; the Lower School students are already starting to prepare. All of this is a recipe for another incredible school year at LWA.
