An Inwood delicatessen clerk was allegedly beaten by a pair of Far Rockaway residents on Halloween over a dispute of a treat given to two children.
When trick-or-treating with a 10-year-old boy, a brother of one of the defendants, and a 9-year-old daughter of a family friend, Daquan Rose, 26, and Samone Sturgis, 23, both of Beach 51st Street, entered the Burnside Deli on Burnside Avenue in Inwood at 3 p.m. on Oct. 31, police said.
An argument ensued with the store’s clerk over what item was given to the children as a Halloween treat, and Rose and Sturgis were asked to leave. Angered, Sturgis allegedly stole packages of cookies from the counter, according to police.
When the clerk tried to stop Sturgis, both Rose and Sturgis punched him in the face, then left. He followed the pair into the parking lot and Rose threatened the clerk with a piece of wood, police said. They and the children then fled the scene.
The clerk, who suffered a cut and swelling to his eye, called 911. Police found Rose and Sturgis at the intersection of Pearl Street and Rockaway Turnpike a short time later. They were arrested without further trouble.
Both were charged with robbery first-degree and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The kids were taken to the 4th Precinct in Hewlett and released to an adult family friend, police said.
