Officials should say ‘no’ to casino

To the Editor:

Here we go again — or perhaps I should say, here we don’t go again.

The Republican Nassau County executive and GOP controlled-Legislature want to rely on $20 million generated by a casino in Inwood that doesn’t yet exist without revealing any details until it’s passed!

Thousands of additional cars and buses would use Rockaway Turnpike every week, affecting our quality of life. And what about the inevitable increase in crime that will occur in our neighborhoods? I haven’t read one word about increased police manpower and protection.

Why haven’t our elected officials like Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilman Bruce Blakeman and County Legislator Howard Kopel (R-Lawrence), said a word about this outrage?

Oh, I forgot, they’re also Republicans like County Executive Mangano, who submitted this casino into the budget.

If Kopel would vote against the budget that includes the casino revenue, it may not be approved. But he is a Republican and will vote the way he’s told, and not consider what’s best for his constituents.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-Republican. I’m just sick and tired of elected officials refusing to represent, support and do what’s best for their constituents. I will not accept the idea of “politics as usual.”
