Flushing the Five Towns water distribution system

New York American Water announced that it will be flushing the water distribution system in its coverage area this fall. “This essential part of the company’s maintenance program is performed to clear harmless mineral deposits and sediment that may have built up over time inside the pipes,” company officials stated in a prepared statement.

From Sept. 26 to Oct. 7, flushing will be done in North Woodmere, Woodsburgh, Woodmere and Valley Stream. From Oct. 12 to Oct. 21, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor and Hewlett Neck’s water will be flushed. From Oct. 24 to Nov. 4, Atlantic Beach, Cedarhurst, Inwood, Lawrence, East Atlantic Beach and Meadowmere pipes will be flushed.

Customers may notice discolored water and reduced pressure during the maintenance period, officials said. The discoloration does not affect water quality, they said. Residents are advised to let the water run until it is clear to address these normal side-effects of the flushing.

Company officials recommend making a point of marking the time period on a calendar, setting aside water for cooking ahead of time, checking for discolored water before doing laundry and if necessary, waiting until the water runs clear.
Flushing the water distribution system within the New York American Water service area, which includes the South Shore of Nassau County, is done four times a year.

“Residents should expect the flushing to occur between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday,” officials stated in the release.
