Growth blooms under showers of decisions

Posted

Seniors at Lawrence Woodmere Academy and around the country experienced a downpour of emotions these past two weeks as they received decision letters from colleges. Now comes the responsibility to make a decision toward one’s future education.
We have anticipated these acceptances and rejections since freshman year. The ripped envelopes on our kitchen countertops and the vibration sequences of a new email buzzing through our phones now bring changes in our lives. We’re in, we’ve made it, and somewhere wants us.
Much like the bulbs of spring flowers, our futures are metaphorically watered by the April showers of rejection and acceptance and we experience a good chance of a reality check. These seeds have been planted and taken care of since freshman year and now this downpour of opportunity encourages them to bloom. Some flowers are scared, their roots wiry and a little unstable. Some flowers shoot straight up without looking back. Yet, all these flowers come together to make a beautiful bouquet that is the Class of 2014.
I can honestly say I’m a little scared. I’m intimidated by the reality that this is my future. I am not just the flower that’s blooming, but I now have a say in the bouquet I join. Knowing that my time at LWA is short lingers in my everyday actions; from my mild case of senioritis to the precious moments I spend enjoying the company of friends I have known for practically all my life.
Even with this rainy weather, LWA is an excellent umbrella. I have found shelter in teachers who have been with me through every step of the college process, and warmth in the arms of friends who know the pain of rejection and can appreciate the pride in acceptances.
These past two weeks, I’ve learned that these harsh rains do not stop the sun from coming around and smiling down on every petal. So when an email doesn’t have the text you wanted to read, or your fingers can’t seem to move fast enough to tear open the giant envelope that reads “Congratulations!,” remember these moments, which seem to move as fast as the seasons change, are a part of a growing process that just can’t work without a little rain.
