HAFTR downs DRS for hockey crown

In front of a jam packed crowd at the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR) Sports Complex, the HAFTR High School Hawks defeated the Davis Renov Stahler (DRS) High School Wildcats 2-1 in overtime of the floor hockey championship game of the Metropolitan Yeshiva High School Athletic League on March 23.
Ari Baratz, the game’s most valuable player, tallied both HAWK goals. His first tied the scored at 1-1 at the 6:40 mark of the third period and his second won the game at 8:38 in the extra period. DRS had taken a 1-0 lead in the second period.
HAFTR team captain Jordan Gellman lead by example continuing to play after a first period injury. Goalie Joseph Kestenbaum was “spectacular” in net, Athletic Director Joey Hoenig said, who credited coaches Marc Bruh and Noah Weinrich for guiding the team through the playoffs as they beat the league’s top seed, the TABC Storm in Teaneck, New Jersey and the No. 2 seeded DRS squad.
Wildcats netminder Ari Gutenmacher fended off a barrage of HAFTR shots and kept his team in the game.
