HAFTR Highlights

Having fun with science

Posted

Earlier this month, students from the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR) High School attended the Long Island Science Congress hosted by St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington.

The Long Island Science Congress is a science fair that draws competitors from all over Long Island. The junior division was held on April 12; the senior division was on April 13. The junior division is open to all seventh- and eighth-graders as well as ninth-graders who are taking their first state science Regents course. Each project is judged three times over the course of four and a half hours.

HAFTR held its own science fair the day after the senior division. All grades took part and there were more 100 participants. Projects were judged by science teachers and 12th-grade students who have been involved in the HAFTR Science and Engineering Institute. It was a huge success.

Parents were invited to come and view students’ projects. Justin Lish, a HAFTR senior, was the keynote speaker. He spoke about the summers he spent doing science research. Awards will be given out by grade for first, second and third place.
