Hewlett-Woodmere School District Superintendent Dr. Joyce Bisso officially announced at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting that she will retire after the 2014-15 school year. Her effective retirement date is June 30.
Bisso joined the district in August 1994 as the assistant principal at Hewlett High School. She then became the interim high school principal from December 1998 through June 2000. Bisso served as the high school principal from July 2000 through June 2006. In July 2006, she became the assistant superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction,. In 2010, Bisso was named to place Dr. Les Omotani as superintendent
At the July 8 meeting, Bisso said that it has been an honor and a privilege to serve the district for the last 20 years. “I am so fortunate that my vocation and avocation have been one in the same, allowing me to touch the lives of thousands of our community’s children along the way,” she said. “I am grateful for the daily exchanges with our dedicated staff, for classrooms full of the joy of learning, for supportive parents, and for a community committed to the education of children.”
Scott McInnes, president of the Board of Education, spoke for all the trustees when he thanked her for years at Hewlett-Woodmere. “We know that she will continue to give the children, staff, parents, and community 110 percent until her very last day,” he said. “We look forward to the year-long celebration of her dedication and contributions to Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools.”
A national search for a new superintendent will get underway in September, district officials said. Dr. Peter Weber, the assistant superintendent of Business was named deputy superintendent during the transition period.
“I look forward to spending the last year of my extraordinarily fulfilling career with the Hewlett-Woodmere learning community,” Bisso said.
A more comprehensive story on Bisso’s career will be in next week’s Nassau Herald.
