Juggling the midterm snow schedule

Posted

As students prepared for midterms last week, they were caught by surprise when school was closed Jan. 27, due to a snowstorm.
All midterms for Tuesday were cancelled and pushed back until Wednesday or Thursday or Friday, which was supposed to be the final day of classes for the second quarter, ended up being a day reserved solely for make-up exams.
Many were affected by the midterm test schedule change. Some agree that the new schedule allowed them to have more time to study and better prepare, while others believe that they were now more stressed, as many now had more than one midterm to take on the same day.
“The snow day resulted in my French midterm being moved from Tuesday to Friday. I think it was a huge inconvenience for me because I was hoping to finish up my exams early on in the week and just relax and wait for college responses to slowly come in. It is a very stressful time for myself and all seniors, but I did not have time to relax because I had to keep studying for my exam,” said senior Divya Lall.
Personally, I prefer to just “get things done,” even if I do not feel like sitting and taking a two hour test. I feel better just getting tests and essays over with, instead of gaining a few extra days to prepare. As a proactive student, I like to prepare in advance and study beforehand, not to wait three extra days and make sure to retain all the information in my head until I finally sit down and take the test.

Although it was a unique circumstance and there was no way the school could administer the exams, it is indeed a hassle for all involved- students and staff included.
Midterms count as two test grades in a student’s second quarter average. It is important that teachers are able to grade them and give them back to their students so they can review any questions they had or found difficult in class.
As Hewlett High School slowly moves into the third quarter, the midterms (and hopefully the snow) are behind us as we aim to finish out the year strongly.
