Kaminsky defeats Fertig for 20th Assembly District

Rice beats Blakeman in the 4th Congressional District

Democrat Todd Kaminsky will succeed fellow Long Beach resident Harvey Weisenberg in the 20th Assembly District after defeating Avi Fertig, a Republican from Woodmere, on Tuesday. Weisenberg is retiring from the State Legislature when his two-year term expires at the end of the year.
Fertig said he intends on running again in two years and this campaign was an education for him. "I went into this campaign learning about how to try to access the people who aren't usually supporters," said Fertig, adding he expects to sucessful next time.
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice will head to Washington, D.C., in January to take a seat in the House of Representatives after defeating Republican Bruce Blakeman in the 4th Congressional District race.

In the 5th C.D., Gregory Meeks (D-St. Albans) won re-election over challenger Allen Steinhardt, who ran on the Allen for Congress line. The district includes Inwood, Valley Stream and Elmont.

“While the Republicans had an overwhelming victory during yesterday's midterm elections, I agree with President Obama that we must continue to focus on governing and passing laws that move our country in the right direction. It's critical now more than ever that we put the needs of the American people over partisanship. The progress we have made is undeniable – unemployment rate is on a steady decline, our economy is well on its way to full recovery, and more Americans have access to affordable, quality healthcare. To that end, I look forward to working with my colleagues on the other side of the aisle on issues that are pertinent to the American people such as creating more jobs, investing in infrastructure, and expanding access to affordable higher education," Meeks said.

Incumbent Republican State Sen. Dean Skelos, of Rockville Centre, will return to Albany as the Senate’s majority leader after soundly defeating challenger Patrick Gillespie in the 9th Senatorial District.
Republican incumbent Brian Curran, of Lynbrook, and Democrat Michaella Solages, of Elmont, will rejoin the Democratic-controlled Assembly.
In state-wide races, Democratic incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo defeated challenger Rob Astorino, the Republican county executive of Westchester, and Democratic incumbent Comptroller Tom DiNapoli beat Robert Antonacci II, of Syracuse. Democratic Attorney General Eric Sneiderman of Manhattan also won re-election over challenger John Cahill, a Republican from Yonkers.
