The “Make a Musical Competition” is winding down for Lawrence High School, which is one of three New York-area schools that are among 30 selected finalists to receive a $3,000 gift card to repair or improve the school’s performance space, as the April 10 deadline is fast approaching. The contest is sponsored by the NBC television show “Smash” and Lowe’s the home improvement franchise. The Cedarhurst high school’s auditorium was flooded in Hurricane Sandy. Water seeped under the stage and the carpeting and seat cushions had to be replaced. The school was closed on Jan. 16, as the electrical system was deemed potentially inoperable after saltwater from Sandy floodwaters corroded the wires. The high school reopened on April 3.
The other New York Schools are Scholars’ Academy in Rockaway Park and the Sherman Central School in upstate Sherman.
“Smash” focuses on the making of the next big Broadway musical. Five out of the 30 receiving the most votes will receive the gift card. Anyone can vote from a single computer every 24 hours by visiting www.makeamusical.org. The winners will be announced on April 11.
