Hundreds of golfers from around the state can only dream about golfing on the big stage. With the New York State Open qualifiers, many more golfers have been able to make that dream a reality.
The seven qualifiers, which take place from May 29 to June 29, determine who can play golf from July 14-16 at the NY State Open at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale,. The entire tournament is organized by the Metropolitan PGA, which Jeff Voorheis currently overseers as the tournament director.
“The New York State Open Championship is held annually at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course,” he said. “Professional and amateur golfers from New York State may attempt to qualify for the championship at one of seven qualifiers across the state. A number of spots in the championship field is assigned to each qualifier based on the number of entrants. The qualifying sites are chosen by the local PGA sections based on course availability and dates, as well as the facilities desire to host.
One of the seven New York State Open qualifiers is scheduled to take place on Monday, June 29th at the Lawrence Yacht and Country Club. The qualifier, which is Long Island’s second and final of the tournament, will boast golfers from a slew of clubs around the county, including the Ardsley Country Club, Siwanoy Country Club, Holbrook Country Club and Crab Meadow Golf Course.
“General Manager Leo McMahon and head golf professional Peter Procops, both PGA members, were strong advocates for hosting the qualifier and offered the Lawrence Golf Course on June 29,” Voorheis said.
It is the second consecutive year that a qualifier will take place at the village owned and operated club, Sean Sage, assistant manager of the golf course said. Local courses with participants include the host club and the Woodmere Club.
The qualifiers are intended to be a serious competition. “The cut usually depends on the field, the golfers’ scoring abilities, how big the field they’re looking for the NY State Open is,” Sage said. “The golfers are going to go out shooting as low as they possibly can to qualify.”For more information, or to follow the tournament online, visit metpga.bluegolf.com.
