It was several hours after Times Square was cleaned up from the annual New Year’s revelry in Manhattan, but at 5:17 p.m. on Jan. 1, Ariana, weighing 5 pounds, 13 ounces and 18 inches long, was born to Far Rockaway resident Jayashree Mahomed at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, the only hospital on the Rockaway Peninsula.

Her father, Zafraz, grandparents, Sadhna and Afraz, aunt Areefa and cousins, who also live in Far Rockaway, welcomed Ariana into the world on that Sunday.
St. John’s officials said that every year they “eagerly await the first baby of the New Year. It is a joyful and special moment for everyone.”

Hospital Chief Executive Officer CEO Gerard Walsh presented the new parents with baby clothes, equipment, pampers and toys for a baby girl. The St. John’s Auxiliary Committee donated all items.
