The parking lot of the closed Number Six School at 523 Church Ave. in Woodmere will house a fully equipped Nassau County Office of Emergency (OEM) Management disaster response and relief trailer, according to county officials.

Cots, blankets, linens and various hygiene supplies are kept in the trailer for immediate availability to provide first aid and shelter to residents and emergency responders after extreme storms, fires, gas leaks and other incidents that could people at risk.

“Woodmere is the geographic center of the Five Towns, and adjacent to many of the areas in the Five Towns hardest hit during Hurricane Sandy,” County Executive Ed Mangano said. “In the event of catastrophe we anticipate having the disaster recovery and relief trailer in Woodmere will serve as an easy point of access for crucial recovery and relief resources.”

Should an emergency occur, OEM will have direct access to all of the trailers deployed throughout the county. OEM made effective use of these trailers following Sandy in assisting thousands of residents, county officials said.

“This allocation of resources is crucial to Nassau County’s aggressively proactive approach to future natural and man-made disasters,” Mangano said.
