Raising money in memory of his grandfather

Atlantic Beach teen campaigns on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Avi Nessim, from Atlantic Beach, a graduate of The Brandeis School in Lawrence and now a freshman at the North Shore Hebrew Academy is one of 14 Long Island students chosen to take part in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Students of the Year campaign. Nessim was selected based on his charitable efforts on behalf of LLS.

For the past five years, Nessim has raised money for LLS, and every year has been better than the previous one. He said this campaign is especially meaningful to him as he collects money in honor of his late grandfather, Abraham Nessim, who he is named after.

Avi never met his grandfather, who died of leukemia at 53 in 1977. Today, his chances of survival would most likely have been much greater due to the medical advances made that have four times as many people beating leukemia and lymphoma compared to 40 years ago.

The person who raises the most money between Feb. 9 and March 23 is named Student of the Year, and is awarded a $2,500 scholarship to the college or university of his or her choice.
