The Woodmere Bay Yacht Club, which includes members from the Five Towns and surrounding communities, took part in the Spirit Rider Regatta off of Long Beach on Sept. 7.

Approximately 20 boats participated in the annual event that was established by Noreen O’Keefe Costello in memory of her brother, Patrick O’Keefe, a firefighter who died in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He was a member of FDNY Rescue Company One.

The O’Keefe Foundation awards a scholarship to a high school senior who lost a parent to a violent act.

A Captains’ dinner on Sept. 6 and a post race barbecue last Saturday was hosted by the yacht club at its East Rockaway clubhouse that is still undergoing repair following Hurricane Sandy. In all, 130 attended the fundraiser, including students from West Point and the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
