April deadlines loom for claims

A deadline is looming as a proof of loss form must be submitted to NY Rising on April 28 by insured homeowners who remain in need of assistance with their flood claims from Hurricane Sandy.
April 11 is the deadline for new applications to be submitted to New York Rising, a state-sponsored funding source. Claims are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis with a caseworker assigned to each. The agency assists homeowners both with and without home insurance.
New York State has authorized $405 million in payments to 6,330 individual Long Island homeowners for Sandy repairs and buyouts, according to Barbara Brancaccio, a N.Y. Rising spokeswoman said at the resource recovery fair at Lawrence High School on March 6. “For home repair reimbursement, 3,064 homeowners have received $104 million dollars in reimbursement checks for work they already completed,” Brancaccio said. “Every homeowner who is eligible for a reimbursement and applied by the end of the year has received their check.”
N.Y. Rising also advances funds for additional repairs. “The state has issued a check for every homeowner who is eligible for a construction repair award and applied by the end of the year,” Brancaccio said. “That is a total of $160 million for 4,819 homeowners. These are funds to hire a contractor to complete additional work.”
Michael Raab is a Nassau County storm recovery liaison from Freeport. A Sandy victim himself, Raab has worked to help people get their homes repaired. “Over 100 people from Freeport have signed up for help from my office alone,” Raab said. “I would estimate almost 20,000 people in Nassau County have signed up for help and another 5,000 who need help but haven’t signed up.”
