From the 300 semifinalists who compete annually for $1.25 million in awards, 40 finalists are invited to Washington, D.C., each March to compete for the top award of $100,000. There they display their work publicly and meet with noted scientists who put their projects through a final round of judging. The finalists will be announced at the end of January.
