Six to be inducted in Hewlett-Woodmere alumni Hall of Fame

The Hewlett-Woodmere Alumni Association will induct six Hewlett High School graduates into its Hall of Fame during a induction brunch and ceremony at the high school on Sunday beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Charles Rait, class of 1962, Jeffrey A. Bader ’63, Laurie Lipton ’71, H. Gwen Marcus ’74, Matthew J. Bassiur ’91 and Gus Rosendale ’96 are the inductees.

Laurie Lipton

An imaginative artistic talent combines with Lipton’s memorable drawing technique to produce art that has an astounding amount of detail created by drawing thousands of tiny lines that stunningly obtain tone, form, light and shade. Her works have been exhibited extensively at shows and galleries in London, Scotland, Spain, Paris, Holland, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, New York, Baltimore, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, Florida and California.
Publications and media in Australia, the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Canada and the U.S. have included her art. “The Extraordinary Drawings of Laurie Lipton,” contains 70 of her drawings spanning three decades. H. Gwen Marcus

    Named of the 50 most powerful women in cable by “Cable Fax: The Magazine and one the 100 most powerful women in entertainment by “The Hollywood Reporter,” Marcus, who works for Showtime Networks Inc. in New York as executive vice president, general counsel, is the cable company’s chief legal officer and helps shape strategies as senior management.      
    Speaking at schools and on business, legal, and diversity panels, Marcus mentors students and colleagues about careers, management, women in the workplace and diversity.  She chairs committees and boards for not-for-profit organizations, including Theatre Development Fund (TDF/TKTS) and the LGBT Community Center. For several consecutive years, she was the largest individual fundraiser for AIDS Walk New York. 

Charles Rait

    Rait, founded and served as executive director, president and member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN). His leadership expanded NANN’s membership throughout the world and received the organization’s lifetime achievement award.
    He also founded and served as editor and publisher for 30 years of the journal “Neonatal Network: The Journal of Neonatal Nursing.” Rait also established the Academy of Neonatal Nursing (ANN) that provides educational opportunities and conferences for NICU nurses He is president of Neonatal Nurses of Northern California, established NICU Ink Book Publishers, and published the award-winning, “Neonatal Intensive Care: What Every Parent Needs to Know.”

Matthew J. Bassiur

    Combating counterfeiting and fraud, and managing global strategic planning and intelligence as vice president for Pfizer Global Security, Bassiur is the deputy to Pfizer’s chief security officer. 
    He serves on the boards of the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement Foundation and the International Anti Counterfeiting Coalition. The Society of Asian Federal Officers named him Civilian of the Year. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce honored him for distinguished service as a federal government official. As a Fulbright Scholar, he taught intellectual property law in Beijing.
    Bassiur also worked for Apple Inc.’s Global Security division, the federal government Department of Justice’s Computer Crime & IP Section, chief of the Trademark Counterfeit Unit, and was an assistant DA in Manhattan.

Gus Rosendale

    From the Olympics to a mining disaster, Rosendale, now the breaking news reporter and fill-in anchor for NBC News 4 New York, is an award-winning television reporter.
    The New York and Vermont Associated Press bureaus have honored him for breaking and general news coverage. He received the New York State AP Award for Best Newscast.
    Previous jobs include weekday anchor, breaking news field anchor and special assignment reporter for KSTP-TV (ABC) in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, and a main anchor, weekend anchor and weekday reporter for upstate Plattsburgh and Burlington, Vermont, and on WPTZ-TV (Hearst/NBC), when he covered the Salt Lake Olympics.
    He also contributes his time to the United Way and Salvation Army charities.

Jeffrey A. Bader

    A Brookings Institution’s John C. Whitehead Senior Fellow in International Diplomacy, Foreign Policy for the institution’s John L. Thornton China Center, Bader served as special assistant to President Obama as senior director for East Asian Affairs on the National Security Council from January 2009 to April 2011. His many positions include the national committee on U.S. - China relations, academic advisory board U.S.- China Congressional Working Group, U.S. State Department director in Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs, deputy consul general to Hong Kong, assistant U.S. trade representative, ambassador to Namibia, and deputy assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs. Bader received the U.S. State Department’s Distinguished Service Award. He wrote, “Obama and China’s Rise: An Insider’s Account of America’s Asia Strategy” (2012).
