Students build for midterm success through review and routine

Posted

If you were to walk through the halls of Lawrence Woodmere Academy during the second week of January, you would see one thing: stressed students. This is because on the 20th of the month, midterm exams began.
Every year, the identical process plays out. Over the course of the week prior to the tests, teachers hand out review material to their classes. The studious will start reviewing what they were taught, while the neglectful will disregard picking up a single book. Kids work together in the library or cafeteria during their free periods and hammer concepts into their brains until they’ve reached maximum capacity. At home, the endless studying continues. As the first midterm approaches, the anxiety kicks in.
So how does one deal with the extreme levels of stress that go along with pre-midterm week? Something that makes me feel better is knowing that I’m not alone. My friends and peers that take pride in their grades are in the same boat as I am. This monotonous process that we’ve been going through since freshman year is always abled to be conquered in the end.
Junior, Gaby Irizarry said, “The week before midterms is really difficult to get through, but I know the hard work and studying pays off when I get back a good grade.”
Teachers also play a vital role in coping with students’ midterm jitters. They are available virtually whenever we need to go to them for help. In addition, we kids do an excellent job of pestering them to explain what exactly will be on our exams.
Time management is essential to ensure that students won’t lose their minds over these tests. By studying for every subject in small increments throughout the day, one could boost their success. For example, doing some math problems during an off period, reading over a textbook at lunch, and making index cards to learn history terms are proven methods for doing well. Preparation is one of the most crucial parts in battling pre-midterm week.
By now as a junior, I should be used to the routine I go through the second week in January every year but I’m not. One thing I have realized since high school began is that getting through the tests is doable. Stressing is inevitable. However, support from my peers and teachers, as well as managing my study time, are important ingredients in the recipe for dealing with these exams.
