Time to ratchet up student school spirit

Posted

Peek into Hewlett High School’s gymnasium on Oct. 9 and you will see a sea of blue and white, students cheering beside faculty, and the signature Hewlett Bulldog. All of these are a part of Pep Rally, an annual event celebrating school spirit and the upcoming homecoming.
This year, prior to homecoming on Oct. 10, Hewlett High has spirit week planned for Oct. 5-9. Each day, students will wear to school proper attire for the day’s theme, such as “Twinning Tuesday” and “Wacky Wednesday.” All students look forward to wearing their funky outfits to school and showing off their school spirit, especially in blue and white for the Pep Rally. At the Pep rally, varsity sports coaches will speak about their season, and the Pep Rally Dance Team, Step-Squad, cheerleaders, and the marching band’s Color Guard will perform. It is an event their peers are eager to watch.
Before the homecoming football game, there is the parade that includes Hewlett’s marching band and Color Guard. Homecoming princes and princesses will also be chosen by faculty to ride with honor in the parade. Last year’s homecoming parade was cancelled due to rain, so students are especially looking forward to this year’s event. For seniors, this homecoming is particularly meaningful as it marks the first of the “lasts” of their high school career.
“I can’t believe this will be my final homecoming at Hewlett High School,” Franny Gould said. “I couldn’t be more excited to lead the marching band as Drum Major in the parade and I think the band’s practice will finally pay off. This parade will be great preparation for our performance in Disney World in the spring.”
At the football game against Lawrence High School at 2 p.m., there will also be a halftime show by the cheerleaders and Color Guard. The games against Five Towns rival Lawrence are always exciting. The Bulldogs feature multiple promising underclassmen, which will hopefully contribute to a victory.
Looking back through the years, students can agree homecoming festivities are definitely a memorable part of high school tradition. Pep Rally is also one of the first events where freshmen can participate in the high school’s spirit. Whether cheering on the sideline, performing for the entire student body, or scoring a touchdown, every student is able to participate and have fun. Go Bulldogs!
