Watch out for Asian longhorned beetles

Cedarhurst officials warn of possible infestation

Posted

Cedarhurst village officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for a possible infestation of Asian longhorned beetles as the insects have been found in Oyster Bay, Huntington and Babylon towns and as far west as Queens.
These beetles can destroy trees, but are harmless to humans and most pets. Signs to look out for include: dime-sized exit holes in trees; shallow scars in bark, sawdust-like material around the tree; dead branches and the beetle as well. They attack a variety of tree species such as maple, ash, birch, elm, horse chestnut, willow and poplar.
If you think a tree or trees are breeding grounds for the beetle or you have seen the insect, notify the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets at 1-(877) 786-7252. Also inform the village at mayor@cedarhurst.gov.
