Woodsburgh village celebrates 100 years

Though it is home to only 778 residents and is 0.4 square miles in size, the Village of Woodsburgh had a huge impact on the way we live our lives today being one of the first “planned” communities, where people lived outside New York City and commuted to and from work.

The village, which was highlighted in historian Millicent Vollono’s book about the Five Towns, marked its centennial with a dedication ceremony at the intersection of Wood and Keene lanes, where a monument stands that remembers Culluloo Telawana, who is considered one of the last Rockaway Iroquois Indians.

A time capsule was buried on the site that is now a small park with benches. It included photos of many of the houses in present-day Woodsburgh, along with several other artifacts.
