AP exams, next year prep, seeking sports success

Posted

April and May are two of the busiest months of the year for high school students. With spring break being weeks later than usual this school year, students at Hewlett High have returned to school to begin Advanced Placement exams next week. Despite these impending stressful exams, sports and other extracurricular activities are in full swing.

The Pupil Personnel Services’ club, PALs, helped coordinate the link night program on April 29. The program allows parents of eighth grade students to collect information on how best to prepare their children for high school, and how to adequately provide support for students entering the high school. Parents have the opportunity to meet in smaller groups with their child’s guidance counselor in order to understand what it will be like for their children to work with the counselor for the next four years.

The boys lacrosse team’s record is 8-3 so far this season, having won key games against Carrey, Long Beach, Lynbrook, Oceanside and Locust Valley. The boys are 3-1 in conference play, with a tough game against Garden City anticipated on May 1, which also happens to be Senior Day.

Another tough game is anticipated against Calhoun, on May 7. Faceoff specialist Robbie Levitz, attackman Sam Rovner, midfielder Vinny Morello, goalie Max May, defenseman Matt Weiss, and midfielder Ethan Cohn are the senior captains this year. Junior captain and midfielder Jonny Miller said that their team is “very close.” The boys “have been playing together since a young age, which allows [them] to play very well together.” Miller added that the team has a, “very unique style in play that has allowed our team to beat some of the best teams in the county, such as Oceanside and Locust Valley.”

The girls’ lacrosse team has an overall record of 6-3, 4-2 in conference play. Katie Korin, a key midfielder on the girls’ team, is recovering from an injury but has returned, and the team notices a great difference with her back. Korin highlighted the talent of their goalie, eighth-grader Ava Giugliano. It is far from typical to see an eighth-grader playing at the varsity level; however, Giugliano’s talent has proved that she deserves to be on the team.

Mia Perkell, a sophomore attack on the team, has skills that have helped the squad. Another key player on the team is senior midfielder Margo Verschleiser, who has 35 goals and 16 assists so far this year. “Margo is like the glue that holds the entire team together,” Korin said. The captains this year are Verschleiser, Nicole Herrera, Sam Panzarella, and Jordyn Zeidman. The girls will play Mepham on May 2, and have their senior game on Saturday, May 4 against East Meadow.

The girls’ softball team has won eight of their 10 games so far this season. The historically successful softball team is expected to finish off their season strongly. The boys’ baseball team has won six of their 12 games as of press time, and will finish off the season with six more games, split evenly between South Side and Bethpage.

We wish Hewlett students the best of luck on their upcoming exams, and our athletic teams the best of luck in the concluding part of their spring season.
