Atlantic Beach resident and North Shore Hebrew Academy High School sophomore Avi Nessim is a student supporter involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

In fifth grade, he began fundraising for the Pennies for Patients program, and since then raised $20,000 for the charitable organization.

Nessim’s inspiration comes from both his grandfather he never met, Abraham Nessim, who died of leukemia at 53 in 1977, and his close friend Yoni, is now suffering from the disease. He fundraises to honor his grandfather’s memory, and to help others who are fighting the disease.

The Long Island chapter chose Nessim to be featured in the national volunteer newsletter. In the newsletter, he said that “it’s a big time commitment but so, so worth it.”
