Incumbent Sanitary District No. 1 Commissioner Harry Beltrani, is running unopposed for re-election. Commissioner terms are for five years. When asked about his role, Beltrani said, “I check the pay roll. I check on the money.”

This would be Beltrani’s fourth term on the board. He’s running again because, “I’m enjoying it,” he said. “We’ve been keeping everything nice and clean. I think we’re doing a good job.” He added that he hopes the district can continue to do the job as well as they have.

Sanitary District No. 1 is one of five independent districts in the Town of Hempstead and encompasses Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Inwood, Lawrence, Woodmere, Woodsburgh and portions of the unincorporated areas of Lynbrook and Green Acres.

The district’s Board of Commissioners also includes Irving Kaminetsky, James Vilardi, Frank Argento and Lino Viola. George Pappas is the district superintendent.

Voting takes places on July 9, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., at the district headquarters, 1 Bay Blvd., Lawrence.
