Celebrating Woodstock’s 50th anniversary at Temple Israel in Lawrence

Central Avenue was not closed and Jimi Hendrix did not wake up anyone up, but the 50th anniversary celebration of the three-day Woodstock Festival at Temple Israel of Lawrence on Aug. 16 was a colorful affair.

Temple members came adorned with love beads, dressed in tie-dyed shirts and feeling groovy as they held up the peace sign to commemorate the seminal music event of the 1960s that took place in upstate Bethel in August 1969.

Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum spoke about the similarities between those times and now, when America was going through cultural, political and social upheaval.
