Dog day morning on the Atlantic Beach Bridge

Police officer aids car owner and her two canines

The hot, humid weather on July 1, hit a pair of dogs and a car hard on the Atlantic Beach Bridge at 11:45 a.m., according to Nassau police.

Officer Accardi received a radio call to assist a disabled motorist, police said. He arrived and saw a BMW 530 on the side of the road with the driver, Joan Silke, of Bayside, out of the vehicle with her two dogs on their leashes. For their safety he parked his patrol vehicle behind her car with his emergency lights on.

As the officer got out of his patrol car, he saw that the two dogs were in distress from the extreme heat. He offered to have her and the dogs, a pair of 12-year-old Mini Golden Doodle-second generation canines — cream-colored Molly and the apricot-colored Maggie — shelter in the air-conditioned police car. The dogs soon responded to the cooler temperature. Within the hour the owner’s vehicle was operational and the trio were on their way home.
